Status report 2026/8/23
Skyrim's latest version (1.7.99.0) has been released. While people are celebrating the increased storage capacity for consoles, I’ve also seen absolute chaos in the community—comments pointing out that despite PS4 showing 15GB of available space, only 1GB can actually be used, alongside reports of the game failing to launch altogether. Because of this, I’ve decided to hold off on updating my own PS4 for a while.
I see two potential reasons for this issue:
1. Bethesda simply made a configuration mistake that might be patched later.
2. Sony is intentionally limiting the allocation as a safety measure, knowing that loading 15GB of heavy assets (high-res textures and dense meshes) would frequently crash the PS4 due to memory limitations.
I’ve read comments saying a full reinstall fixes the issue, but doing that wipes all installed mods. I really want to avoid that because I have wonderful mods installed by creators who have essentially retired, and I don't want to lose them forever.
What kind of mods are they? Simple, lovely things—like a few unique travelers roaming the world, or a small bathhouse added near Whiterun.
Even though I could easily recreate those mods myself now with my current skills, I want to cherish that pure excitement I felt when I first modded Skyrim on PS4 and thought, "This is exactly what I was looking for."
